There was once a tiger who lived in an ancient forest that flourished with life and teemed with magnificent colors. This tiger was the keeper of the forest and was strong and fast; yet, he was also content and compassionate. He shared only what was given by the forest.
Tiger walked everyday through the forest and every day the birds would gracefully perch upon his back as he surveyed and absorbed the beauty of the land he cared for. This beauty embedded itself back into the tiger making his stripes dance on his flesh, the brightest and stunning stripes known. In the evening Tiger would retire to his cave, which lay under a massive stone that lay nuzzled underneath a giant and ancient tree.
One morning while out on his walk, with the birds upon his back as always, he came upon the God Epimetheus. Epimetheus, brother of Prometheus gave all the other animals except for humanity their glorious array of beauty and skill, but had not left enough for humans when he came to the end of his duty.Epimetheus smiled upon Tiger and spoke softly, “Tiger, I see you do well with the great gifts I have bestowed upon you, but I come today to offer to make your stripes burn even brighter and eyes see farther and body carry you further. Will you not take these gifts from me since you have brought great esteem to those I have given you in the past?” Tiger thought little of Epimetheus’s offer, for he had no need of greater colour, speed, or sight. He spoke thus “Thank you, Father, for your gifts, you have given me grandeur I cannot repay, but with my care and love for the forest; however, I have no need of these extra gifts and neither does the forest.”Epimetheus smiled at Tiger and with a slight nod vanished from the forest floor as quickly as he had arrived.
It was not but the next day when once again on his walk through the forest that he took at a leisurely pace that the God Epimetheus’s brother Prometheus appeared to Tiger close to where the event had occurred the day before.Prometheus was a titan who stole fire from the Gods and gave it to humanity imbuing them with techne and ambition. Prometheus smiled upon Tiger and spoke thus, “Tiger you have tended this forest well and deserve reward for you service, let me bestow upon you those gifts that my brother cannot, that of techne and speech, so you may manage your forest better and converse with those I have made of humanity.”Tiger thought about this offer no longer than the last and spoke in reply, “Thank you Prometheus, but as with your brother I must decline.I have no need for techne as the forest manages itself, I am merely its keeper, and the speech you mean is for humans alone and I fear I would lose my voice for all other animals if I took up the tongue of humanity.” Prometheus smiled as his brother did, and in much the same way vanished into the thick and humid air.
Many years later, the spirit of Tiger would perish and he would enter the body of a human. He would have techne and speech and all manner of comfort and convenience at his hand.Yet, despite all he would have, nothing would satiate his desire to have his Tiger’s stripes upon his flesh and the birds upon his shoulder.
The eagle relished.
